Greg Kirby writes,

I am so grateful for the many, many times the Ards opened their home to host youth activities. The kids always loved swimming there, jumping on the trampoline, playing with the animals, watching David shoot flaming arrows into the bonfire, etc.

My most entertaining memory though was when I took Reid, one of our summer interns out there when they were hosting him. When we arrived, Sherry met us at the door, and led us through the garage past two dogs she was nursing back to health. The first order of business was to see the monkey. Grissom didn't disappoint. Then Sherry led us upstairs to where Reid was staying for the summer. She informed us that David was in the bathroom, to which Reid, Beth (the other intern who was with us) and I all kind of looked at each other and snickered. Only to snicker more when Sherry cracked the bathroom door and poked her head in and ask if was coming out. David replied that he would be out soon. When Sherry shut the door, she turned to us and said, "Shoo, it stinks in there." I looked at Reid and Beth as if to say "welcome to South Carolina." As Sherry was showing Reid around the room, she introduced him to a 2 foot long monitor lizard in an aquarium that had been abandoned in Mt. Pleasant. The lizard could best be described as Satan's nephew. This thing was mean. It only got meaner David emerged from the bathroom and started poking it with a fly swatter. We then found out that the bathroom stunk because David was re-caulking the shower, not the reason we had assumed. Unfortunately, that was the summer that gas was $4 a gallon, so Reid ended up moving back to stay with someone closer to the church, but he was certainly entertained for the brief time he was there. He often told people that he felt so lucky to be able to stay at a petting zoo with a pool.
